WISH Befriender Volunteers

WISH befriender volunteers have been one of the most successful and innovative services that WISH has provided for more than 12 years now to woman detained within the High and Medium  secure forensic system.

The volunteers are selected on the basis that they are able to commit themselves to providing a consistent and sustainable  open friendship to the woman they have been chosen to partner. Minimally 2 years would be expected. Partnerships are identified and an  initial introductory meetings take place. Only if both woman are happy about the arrangements does the befriending  process begin, which in the initial stages is supervised by an experienced member of the WISH professional team.

The process of selection, training and supervising this amazing group of woman volunteers, is entirely the responsibility of WISH. All expenses are paid to volunteers by WISH and we fundraise for this purpose. WISH works cooperatively with the Institutions involved to ensure the whole process works as smoothly as possible and is supported through written protocols found in The WISH Formal Agreements that are in place with most organisations where we deliver our services.

WISH offers comprehensive and inclusive training to volunteers that prepares  them for this highly specialised form of befriending. To do this WISH fundraises to pay for the cost of the in-house training that comprises 6 modules.

Many of our volunteers in this category have been with their partners for up to 10 years providing sensitive and diligent support through all the highs and lows associated with woman being detained. Such befriending makes a vital difference to the women, giving them a chance to feel valued and wanted .They feel a sense of pride and success in  being able to sustain a long term relationship in a situation that is often frightening, unpredictable and isolating. Where quite often they are judged and labelled as being difficult and demanding and unable to sustain or tolerate relationships, WISH knows that given the right opportunities women can and do reach out, demonstrate great courage and work hard with their partners, knowing they are equals in  the relationship. The longevity of many of these befriending partnership stand as a testament to women’s abilities to bring about positive changes to their difficult lives while at the same time  enriching the lives of those who have befriended them.

WISH greatly values the work of its volunteers for their dedication and attention to the individual needs of the woman they visit and correspond with.

Currently we have a waiting list of women needing a befriender. If you feel you have the stamina, are non judgemental and passionate about supporting a woman to make a difference to her life opportunities please contact us for an application form.
